Feranmi Odeyemi’s skin

Hey Feranmi, here are some insights based on the answers you gave us when you took our skin survey. The answers you provided really helped us to perfect the product – Base Plus was made with you in mind.

Blackheads and whiteheads

Blackheads and whiteheads are actually a form of acne, and are formed when pores on the skin become clogged with dead skin cells, oil, or bacteria. The difference between the two is that blackheads are formed by pores that stay open, and if the pore closes, a whitehead, or closed comedone, will form. To treat blackheads and whiteheads, people commonly use oil-free, noncomedogenic skin care products, which do not clog the pores, and ones which contain ingredients such as salicylic acid (which works to unblock pores).

Gentle exfoliation using cloths for example or mild chemical exfoliants such as AHAs and BHAs can help to prevent the build of of dead skin cells that could lead to clogged pores. Lactic, salicylic and mandelic acids are often more gentle.

Dull skin can be caused by a range of reasons. Among the most common are: a buildup of dead skin cells, pollution and UV damage. People with a build up of dead skin often turn to the methods of exfoliation mentioned previously to support the skin turning over dead cells, and revealing the fresh, radiant skin underneath.

Uneven skin tone (patchy or hyperpigmented)

In terms of hyperpigmentation – there are different types of hyper pigmentation, such as age spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The condition can be caused by anything from acne scars and sun damage to hormone fluctuations.

People sometimes opt for over the counter creams to treat this, containing lightening ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide or liquorice extract. Stronger agents should always be prescribed by a medical professional. Sun exposure triggers melanin production, so people seeking to alleviate hyper pigmentation are often advised to wear sun screens or blocks to guard against the condition worsening.
