Hey Molly, here are some insights based on the answers you gave us when you took our skin survey. The answers you provided really helped us to perfect the product – Base Plus was made with you in mind.
Acne (including blackheads and whiteheads)
You mentioned that your current skin focuses are Acne with Black / Whiteheads. Acne is caused when glands in the skin begin to produce too much sebum. This can result in the excess mixing with dead skin cells and bacteria, and blocking your follicles. If the plugged follicle is close to the surface of the skin, it swells outwards, creating a whitehead. Alternatively, the plugged follicle can be open to the skin, creating a blackhead.
The difference between the two is that blackheads are formed by pores that stay open, and if the pore closes, a whitehead, or closed comedone, will form. Bacteria that lives on the skin can also infect plugged follicles, causing pus-filled spots and cysts. Causes of acne are different from person-to-person, sometimes triggered by hormonal changes in the body, diet etc.
Treating types of acne
As you mentioned, birth control is a popular method for treating acne for some, as it is thought to support in regulating hormones that could trigger acne. To treat acne, and blackheads and whiteheads, people also commonly use oil-free, non-comedogenic skin care products, which do not clog the pores, and ones which contain ingredients such as salicylic acid (which works to unlock pores).
Gentle exfoliation using cloths for example or mild chemical exfoliants such as AHAs and BHAs can help to prevent the build up of dead skin cells that could lead to clogged pores. Lactic, salicylic and mandelic acids are often more gentle. People with moderate to severe acne are advised to seek advice from a medical professional.
We hope this information was useful and look forward to seeing what you create with us.
